Canada
Canada is absolutely vast, and great swathes of the country are unspoilt wilderness. The culture is tolerant and diverse, where a minority of native Canadians and the many descendents of the waves of immigrants from Europe, Asia and South America now live in admirable harmony.
Given the size of the country, if you want to take in more than one area you will require internal flights. We found very reasonable flights to Canada from the UK with Dialaflight, who also offer internal flights. Here are our top three Canadian destinations.
1. Vancouver
Said to be one of the world's most beautiful cities, Vancouver is situated on Canada's Pacific Coast. Home of Greenpeace, little wonder the physical environment is breathtaking with the Coast Mountains providing a stunning backdrop to the city's mirrored skyscrapers. With the Fraser River to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the east with its busy harbours and clean sandy beaches, there are many opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. With a sophisticated cultural scene, Vancouver boasts a world class symphony orchestra and museum, and contemporary art, music and dance performances. The amazing Chinatown is large and fascinating, and a testimony to Canada's multi-ethnic population. If visiting in the summer try and catch the Vancouver Symphony of Fire, the world's biggest fireworks competition, which is held over several nights.
2. Montreal
French speaking and ethnically diverse, Montreal is Canada's most culturally exciting city. Two thirds of the population are French speaking, with the remainder a mixture of Carribeans, Brits, Italians, Jews, Greeks, Latin Americans, Chinese and Eastern Europeans. With so many cultures represented, little wonder that the festivals, music and cuisine are unmatched in Canada for their variety. Well kempt and chic, Montreal is home to the famous comedy and jazz festivals.
3. Toronto
The largest city in Canada, Toronto is a very liveable city with an undeserved reputation for bland mediocrity. Built along the northern shore of the enormous Lake Ontario, there is a regenerated waterfront with cutting edge galleries and luxury homes. A financial centre, in the city you will find towering skyscrapers and indeed the world's tallest free-standing building, the CN Tower. Toronto also boasts a tolerant multi-ethnic society, and is rich in many wonderful museums and galleries, and the biggest North American film festival, the Toronto International Film Festival. There is plenty to do and see in this bustling city but for those looking for something a little different, the Toronto Islands, just an inexpensive fifteen-minute ferry ride away, are oases of peace and tranquillity. Cars are banned, so the closest you will see to traffic will be the occasional golf cart.
